Even at ninety-two...

Some weeks ago I had an unexpected email from a ninety-two year old retired architect who told me that he had come upon my book, he had read it three times discovered that we were boys in the same Plymouth grammar school, Sutton High, which was closed in 1986 as part of the wholesale political slaughter of grammar schools. He posted a review on Amazon, here it is:

Doctor lark: the benefits of a medical education

The title of this book artfully conceals a portrayal of a series of the author's great "larks" from boyhood to retirement. What we read is far from the waiting rooms of doctor and consultant's surgeries. The prose is straight forward with an innate elegance making the complications of this highly professional physician's life a really exciting adventure story.

You can come to this book completely relaxed. Read in bed, in the bath, on the beach, in the train or listening to music - it soothes-softly, amuses-greatly, excites nail-bitingly-educates-(with information unsought but essential and greatly illuminating). You can drop it and when picked up again read it effortlessly; second and third readings are equally enjoyable.

The scene changes : university to hospital-to RAF-to the Arabian Peninsula and  the cultures of oil-rich states, adventure? Yes, my word!

Finally the author humourously, now very happily retired, tells how he was diddled in various property deals before he eventually retired to France.

We end by knowing Dr Lark.

I think that the world has missed out on a good author, but even at the age of 92 one never knows? Bill Larkworthy
